Blue Crescent Syncs
It’s been over a hundred years since the period of The Roaring 20’s. Yet, the music and the vibe is still with us, in television shows and current culture, with the plethora of Gatsby and Prohibition Ball parties all across the country.

While many aspects of that decade are best left in the past, the music is vibrant and fun, evoking a naughty “devil may care” attitude.
The Blue Crescent Syncopators can help you create that vibe for your next event or festival.
In 2006, there was a heavy interest among the swing dance community to dance to hot or trad jazz (also known for many years as Dixieland) from the 20’s and early 30’s.
Craig’s band Blue Sky 5 was hired for a Gatsby party, but the instrumentation and approach seemed at odds with the repertoire. Fortunately at the time he knew several musicians associated with the Potomac River Jazz Club who specialized in the lexicon of hot. Craig also added banjo to his list of rhythm instruments in another nod toward authenticity. Adding a trombone to clarinet and trumpet, finding a bass player who doubled on tuba and a drummer who had an authentic set from the 1920’s completed the band.
Craig also decided to make this a “bookless” band. There are no charts or set arrangements. The musicians come to the stand with a knowledge of the tunes already in their head. The focus is on listening and responding to each other.
The current rotation of musicians features Jon Mathis, Noah Hocker, Anita Thomas, Brendan Lanighan, David Sager, Danny Tobias, Greg Williams, Chuck Ferrell, Pete Revell and Will Ledbetter.
The Blue Crescent Syncopators have been featured for many years at the DC Bartender’s Guild Prohibition Ball, PRJC Sunday Concert Series, and at Richmond Virginia’s swing event Jammin’ on The James.
